About Us

Smith-Karng Architecture, Inc. was opened in 2001 in San Francisco, California. The President and CEO, Sue Smith, sold her larger predecessor firm, ESS Architects, in 1999 in order to preside over healthcare projects personally. Smith-Karng Architecture is a full-service architectural firm with 10 employees all of whom have over 20 years of experience with hospital renovations and the OSHPD regulatory review process. We provide architectural and design services for renovations, adaptive re-use of existing facilities, installations and relocations of specialized medical equipment, life safety and other infrastructure upgrades, master plans, and temporary emergency equipment.

Our strategy is to work together with the state agencies as early as possible in the design process, be proactive in solving issues early in the design process to prevent costly change orders during construction and expedite the project approvals when time is short. Collectively, the team has completed over 500 OSHPD approved projects and have over 100 years of combined OSHPD expereince. We have worked with OSHPD since its inception in 1983 and have a strong working relationship with the staff which allows us to communicate directly.

Both Smith-Karng Architecture and ESS Architects have many years of working with various hospitals and medical facilities in the Bay Area and throughout California including:
